Sapporo is the center of an urban area with the 4th largest population (not counting Tokyo) in Japan, and it boasts a rich and varied nature. With the beautiful nature and comfortable urban facilities harmoniously coexisting, the city is always ranked among the very best places to live. From the city center, developed on a wide plain at the foot of mountains, we can see a ski-jump and enjoy scenery as it changes from season to season. Another feature of Hokkaido is the dynamic unspoiled natural environment in East Hokkaido, which is registered as a world heritage site.
The Hokkaido University Sapporo campus is located in the central part of the city, and it is
well known for its rich plentiful nature. In the spacious 178 hectare (890 acre) campus, one
of the largest university campuses in Japan, there are a famous avenue of poplar trees and
many historical buildings that attract tourists and the residents alike.
The buildings of the Graduate School of Medicine, Graduate School of Biomedical Science and
Engineering and School of Medicine are located in the central part of the campus.
Hokkaido University School of Medicine celebrated its centennial in 2019.
The Hokkaido University Graduate School of Medicine is focused on seven fields of research
(physiology, pathology, social medicine, internal medicine, surgery, specialized medicine,
and community networked medicine), which together offer an environment that is ideal for an
educational experience provided by a faculty engaged in innovative research activities.
The Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering features an educational system
that harmonizes different fields, including medical science, engineering, hygiene, biology
and science, and offers an educational-research environment best suited to learning the
latest global advances in biomedical science and engineering.
The Faculty of Medicine, carries out world leading research activities, and is
proud of its achievements including the numbers of papers published and referenced.
Collaborative innovation and incubation between the university and enterprises are also in
full swing.
The Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering provides an environment conducive
to promoting world-class studies, enabling students to participate in joint research and
other activities with students from prominent universities outside Japan.
