Our department was established in 2005. Its missions are to make a significant contribution to the fostering of excellent personnel and developing effective health care systems in the field of community medical care. We have two primary goals; one is to produce primary care physicians through systematic undergraduate and postgraduate medical education; the other is to promote research on community medicine, general medicine, and holistic medicine.

Research

1. Research for medical education
As we become actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, we perceive the significance of research in this area. We are conducting research on curriculum in a medical school, although the methodology of medical education is still developing and remains to be improved.
2. Research for primary care medicine
As generalists, we encounter common medical problems in our daily practice in the community. We are interested in the characteristics of common diseases, including their prevalence and outcomes. Moreover, we explore the relationship between human health and people's environments.
3. The effect of physician-patient relationship
The physician-patient relationship has traditionally been recognized as important to the practice of clinical medicine, because a good physician-patient relationship contributes to improved quality of care and health care outcomes. We explore the factors affecting this relationship in primary care settings. Ongoing projects include the following:
The factors affecting this relationship in primary care settings
The relationship between consultation hours and patients' satisfaction
4. Research for health care systems
We also explore health care systems in community medicine, networks of medical institutions, and physicians' career choices. Nowadays, few researchers have shed light on the problems of the medical delivery system and localized medical workforces. These topics are:
Impact on healthcare systems under recent large-scale mergers of cities, towns and villages
Research on the appropriate scale of a hospital in a community
Doctors' career choices and paths in rural areas

Education

1. Undergraduate medical education:
As clinical educators of primary care and general medicine, we lecture on fundamental clinical competence, including vocational attitudes, as well as clinical knowledge and skills (i.e. medical interviews and physical examinations). Focusing on common diseases in primary care settings and conducting an "evidenced based medicine (EBM)" approach are emphasized, which will be indispensable for competent clinicians in any medical discipline.
Furthermore, we also have a special interest in holistic medicine, in which we are expected to understand the patient's background, culture and persona as a whole. "Narrative-based medicine (NBM)," which departs from the traditional biological model and introduces sociological and anthropological methods into medicine. Currently, our primary responsibilities are as follows:
Bedside training in medical encounters with standard patients
Clinical epidemiology seminar
Clinical case study seminar

2. Postgraduate medical education
It is necessary for all physicians to have optimum conditions for lifelong learning. We offer some fascinating classes for junior or senior residents, consultants, graduate students and faculty members.
