The Third Department of Internal Medicine was established in 1947 as the Third Internal Medicine Department in Hokkaido University School of Medicine. This department has been headed since 1994 by Professor Masahiro Asaka, the fourth professor of the department since its establishment, and more than 700 students have studied in this department. In 2000, the Third Department of Internal Medicine became the Gastroenterology and Hematology Section of the Department of Internal Medicine. Research and treatment in the fields of gastroenterology, hematology and clinical oncology have been carried out in this department. Currently, diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and latest treatments including bone marrow transplantation for patients with hematologic diseases are being carried out.

Research

Significant progress has been made in research in various fields, including basic research on genetic diagnosis and gene therapy for hematopoietic organ tumors and malignant gastrointestinal tumors, research aimed at elucidation of the association between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric diseases, molecular biological analysis of hepatic viruses and liver cancer, research aimed at the establishment of a method for culturing hematopoietic stem cells, and research aimed at the elucidation of graft rejection after bone marrow transplantation and the development of new treatments.

Education

The goal of education for medical students is not only to provide students with basic knowledge and skills but also to produce doctors with good personal qualities.
Training after graduation is provided by experienced doctors in affiliated hospitals throughout Hokkaido in fields ranging from primary care to high-level care.
