Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery

In Hokkaido University, clinical practices and basic researches regarding the field of the cardiovascular surgery have been carried out since 1959. The current professor and chairman Yoshiro Matsui has headed the department of cardiovascular surgery since 2006. The main feature of the department is surgical treatment of severe heart failure. As well as being one of the leading institutes in the field of surgical ventricular restoration, Hokkaido University Hospital was certified as a heart transplant center in 2010. In cooperation with the department of cardiovascular medicine, comprehensive treatment for severe heart failure is performed.

Research

The basic and clinical researches have been carried out regarding the effect of surgical treatment for severe heart failure, the mechanism and prevention of spinal cord ischemia during the surgery of thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm, the prevention of intimal hyperplasia after peripheral vascular anastomosis, and the mechanism and effect of cardioplegia. The perioperative cardiac function is our current topic and investigated using various modalities including echocardiogram, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, single photon emission computed tomography, and positron emission tomography. We pursue the criteria distinguishing patients among those who are suit for surgical ventricular restoration, ventricular assist device, or heart transplantation.

Education

Medical students receive the fundamental and clinical education program regarding the field of the cardiovascular surgery from our faculty members. The bed-side teaching is conducted for the 5th and 6th grade students.
Residents learn about the clinical practices of diagnosis, examinations, and basic surgical techniques in the University Hospital and the affiliated hospitals. After the early residential program, they admit the graduate school and are engaged in basic and clinical researches. The clinical training is continued after the graduate school.
